What Is on Most Peoples Christmas Wish List?

Posted by admin on September 30th, 2008

If you are aimlessly buying Christmas presents for people with hopes that just one of those things will please them, then you need to read this article. Discover ways to purchase what they desire, or ideally, provide them with a gift card and then enjoy the remainder of the day in each other’s company.

Christmas gets more extravagant every year. Christmas is time for picking up piles and piles of wrapping paper and trying to figure out how to fit gifts in cars, even though every year we swear that the next year we will be better prepared. Sure it was fun to get gifts when we were kids; but now that we’re adults do we need to continue the crazy mall shopping every year?

The obstacle occurs, because everyone has different tastes. The theory is that if you buy the person a lot of gifts, chances are they will like at least one of them. Do an online search to find the perfect gift for your loved one. Ask people who would know what they want. Over the course of the year, a mild interrogation with in depth and probing questions will aid in identifying a suitable gift. Hopefully, this will keep you from buying them useless trinkets and gadgets. If all these ideas do not work then there is nothing wrong with gift cards. You can personalize these with a few home-baked cookies or ornaments, or with a personalized card that lets them know that you wanted them to have the last say about their gift. Even if you get to spend all your time surrounded by gifts, the best gift of all is spending time with loved ones.

Though many people agree that gift cards are impersonal, isn’t it more impersonal to buy someone a gift they don’t need or want? Gift ideas are hard to come up with but gift cards are a great back up when questioning and snooping about fail. Musch of the time people won’t admit to what they want even if they know. There are lots of ways to give pleasure to this group. Here is a great site for some personalised gift ideas for everyone.

I’m Going with the Boston Fence Company

Posted by admin on September 24th, 2008

When I decided to fence in my backyard, I visited several fence companies, looking for the right material and getting estimates on installation. I’m going with the Boston fence company that I visited. They offer cheaper prices on the material that I liked the best, and they offered the lowest estimate for installation. I’m glad I shopped around. If I had gone with the fence company that was closest, I would have spent a lot more money for the same fence. Since I compared prices, I will get the same fence for a much more affordable price.

When I decided to fence in my backyard, I asked family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers for advice on which fence company to hire. They all recommended the same company. I contacted that company for a quote, which included the price of the materials and and an estimate for installation of the fence. After I obtained the quote, I contacted other companies for quotes. I got a cheaper quote from a Boston fence company. That’s the company I hired. I know that my family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers recommended another company, but I’m going with the company that will do the job for the best possible price.

Airboat Rides in Florida

Posted by admin on September 24th, 2008

Florida is a mass of swamps, lakes and rivers and one of the best ways of getting around in this environment is in an airboat, particularly in the Everglades. With its flat hull and large pusher airplane propellor on the back an airboat is able to ride over both land and water with minimal impact on the environment. It needs only a fraction of an inch of water under the hull.

If you are staying pretty much anywhere in Florida, particularly in Central or Southern Florida, then one of the most fun things you can do is go on a Florida airboat ride

Riding in an airboat is truly exhilarating. One minute you could be drifting slowly down a creek shrouded in mist and surrounded by tall mangrove and cypress trees festooned with Spanish Moss and the next minute you are speeding along a narrow channel cut through 8 foot high reed beds at 45 mph with the engine racing at full throttle just feet from your ears.

The highlight of our first ride was when the captain shot straight over a bank and then did a 360 degree turn without any warning. The whole experience was a bit like riding a rollercoaster but without all the ups and downs.

Once you are out in the wetlands you should get the opportunity to see a wide range of Florida wildlife in their natural habitat; anything from soft-shelled turtles, bald eagles, numerous water birds such as blue herons, cranes, egrets and anhinga and of course alligators.

Your best chances of seeing an alligator is on one of the night time airboat rides when their eyes are picked up in the light of torches shone into the darkness. Because alligators are cold blooded, they take a while to get going in the mornings particularly during the winter months so you are generally more likely to see them during the afternoons than first thing in the morning.

Most airboat companies require a reservation but some of the larger companies operate every 30 minutes throughout the day and you can often just turn up and ride. If you are planning a night trip then you definitely need to book in advance.

Types of Florida airboats

There are really two types of Florida airboat ride, the traditional style small airboats that hold a handful of people, typically up to 6 passengers and the large barge type airboats built specifically for airboat rides that can take as many as 18 to 20 passengers at a time. Both are fun to ride in but the smaller boats are more manoeuvrable and somehow you just feel more in touch with your surroundings in the traditional style airboats.

In some places you can even rent an airboat and drive it yourself though naturally they are not as fast as the real airboats.

Typical Florida airboat ride prices

Tours can range from 30 minutes up to several hours. Expect to pay around $20 for a 30 minute trip, $30-$40 for a one hour trip and $40-$60 for 90 minute trip. Children (3-12 years old) generally pay about half the adult rate and under 2s go free.

Self drive rental airboats cost about $30 per hour.

There are a lot of companies competing for business so look out for discount airboat ride coupons in visitor guides and even on the airboat companies own websites (see our Florida airboat rides directory).

Galiano Getaway

Posted by admin on September 22nd, 2008

With much anticipation, we headed out for our adventure to one of our favourite islands. We were downing our breakfast at the terminal when the call to board the ferry came. We headed out to our car where the line was already starting to move. Perfect timing or blind luck? We were on our way.

The weather was perfect and the water was calm for our trip through the Southern Gulf Islands to Galiano Island. The Queen of Cumberland, a small inter-island ferry, navigated the narrow passage past Peers Island, an island community just opposite the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. From the ferry we could see the viewpoints on the island jewels that make up the Southern Gulf Islands. Wharburton-Pike on Saturna, Bold Bluff on Pender, the spectacular Cliff of Mount Maxwell on Salt Spring, and the Bluffs on Galiano make up the view points where you can see most of the Southern Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands in the United States.

Often on ferry crossings Killer Whales (Orcas) pass nearby or you can see porpoise feeding in Haro Strait. The Ferry passed by Ruckles Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island. The green grassy slopes are a great place to camp. As the ferry pulled into Sturdies Bay, we had to wait momentarily as the ferry from Vancouver backed out into Active Pass. Active Pass - between Mayne and Galiano - is truly one of the most beautiful passages I have ever travelled. On one trip through the pass, we witnessed a transient Killer Whale devouring a sea lion within inches of the Ferry. It was a glimpse of raw nature that few get to see.

From the ferry terminal it was a short drive to the Woodstone Country Inn, our host for day one on Galiano. The Inn sits in a pastoral setting surrounded by lush green farmland. As you walk into the Inn you constantly realize you are in a special place. The architecture is elegant and the rooms are spacious. Gail Nielsen-Pich, the proprietor, greeted us warmly. She made us feel right at home and invited us to tea and the goodies she makes available in the lounge later in the afternoon.

Our room was spacious with a huge bed and sitting area with a fireplace. The West wall was all windows and looks over the pastures to the mountains in the distance. We had a private deck with a beautiful view of the valley.

We spent the afternoon exploring the south end of Galiano and visited a number of beaches, took in the spectacular views from the Bluffs and then drove to Retreat Cove where we explored a fascinating sandstone cave etched into the sandstone shoreline. Gail recommended the Market Café for lunch and it was excellent. If you visit the café, be sure to check out the one-of-a-kind washroom. Then, it was back to Woodstone for tea and goodies. Back in our room we enjoyed a glass of Australian Charaz and relaxed soaking up the view of the valley.

Dinner was exquisite. Potato soup with truffle oil, cucumber salad, and beef tenderloin that was to-die-for. The meal was not complete until we tasted Gail’s incredible bread pudding, undoubtedly the best bread pudding in the world. See you at breakfast!

Boat Detailing - Stainless and Chrome Cleaning

Posted by admin on September 19th, 2008

Good quality deck hardware of stainless steel or chrome is highly resistant to corrosion and the marine environment, but it still needs some maintenance if you want to keep it looking good. Make sure you offer this service if you notice small streaks of surface corrosion due to oxidation of the fasteners. This type of corrosion can be easily removed with a good metal polish. After you are done, protect it with a light coat of marine wax or a light coat of moisture displacing corrosion resistant lubricant. The wax will last longer. On aluminum fittings, polish until the applied polish turns black. Sprinkle Arm & Hammer baking soda on a rag and wipe the black right off or use mineral spirits and squirt it on and wipe it off.

Believe it or not, if you use a lemon peel, it will cut down on grime that other cleaners miss. If you think that is too strong use lemon oil that you use on cabin furniture as a substitute for stainless steel cleaner. Rubbing alcohol also works on stainless steel. When cleaning aluminum look for a grain direction. If you look close you will see it. Rub with the grain. Real bad stains can be rubbed with the shiny side of aluminum foil. Do not polish aluminum when it is 50 F or less outside as it may scratch. Do not use cleaners containing ammonia such as window cleaner as they can cause pitting.

Silver polish works fabulous on aluminum. For brass, go cheap. One tablespoon of flour, one tablespoon of salt and one tablespoon of vinegar. Apply the powder mixture with a clean damp rag and wipe off the tarnish and shine. Wash with soapy water later. If it’s a tough stain, cut a lemon in half, dust the cut end with baking soda and rub on small sections at a time. The baking soda adds the necessary mild abrasive to scrub your brass back to life. You may also use Nev-R-Dull a canister of presoaked wading which can be used to polish the aluminum and metal or Magic Mix from Valco Products in Cincinnati, OH.

The very worst part of baldness for guys is that there is no sure fire miracle. Hair loss has been a big problem for men around the UK but there are marvellous things that might prevent further loss of hair.

There is a lotion based treatment for baldness called Minoxidil that might often be taken in capsule or topical lotion form and might help men regrow their hair and prevent further receding. The hair loss lotion comes in a variety of strengths with five percent being the most popular. The baldness treatment is used under the supervision of a doctor and should be made aware that the baldness treatment is not a stunning miracle cure. However, the tremendous success of this hair loss treatment is around 60 percent. The hair loss treatment course is a minimum of four months before excellent results will often show and all men are recommended to continue the hair loss treatment for at least seven months. Explore the latest Hair LOss techniques from Advanced Hair Studio, home to hair restoration.

For males that do not behold any regrowth with the hair loss treatment they could try baldness surgery. Hair loss surgery is a long term solution and involves moving the hair follicles on the head to reduce bald areas. Hair plugs can be high priced and involves a surgical procedure so may not be for every chap.

My Worst Poker Hand Ever

Posted by admin on September 5th, 2008

This was over a year ago, and it still makes me sick.

I’m sitting at a poker table with a lot of people I know, and I’m holding the large stack of chips, and I’ve just been dealt an Ace-King suited. I’m a happy camper. Just to my right is a new player who has had a few decent hands and has about half my chip count. I double the blind and watch as three more players, including the rookie, call.

The flop comes-a ten and two Kings. I’m sitting on trip Kings and I’m stoked, so I keep betting. The turn comes-3 of clubs and it’s no help to anyone. I throw some more chips into the pot and eventually it’s just the me and the kid, who tentatively calls every time I raise.

The river comes-an Ace completes my full house. I check and the kid raises me. I decide to have mercy and leave him enough chips to keep playing. I call him almost all in and give him a lecture about being more careful with your chips. When he calls, I turn my cards over with a smug grin…one which evaporates as he turns over his pocket Aces. The kid had a full house, Aces over Kings, beating my full house, Kings over Aces. It hurts to even write about it.

poker lesson learned. Keep your mouth shut at the table, because some bastard might end up with the one hand that can beat yours.

Before you decide who to get to design your new project consider these requirements first:

>>Is your web site going to be listed on the major search engines?

>>Does your web designer know about the laws when it comes to web design and accessibility?

>>What advertising methods are going to be used to get your web site positioned on the main search engines?

>>Is your web site going to be cross browser compatible?

Asking your designer these simple questions will save you money and time.
Whys that Barry I hear you say?

Well since last December (actually since 1999) the law has changed to favour the disabled in a variety of ways when it comes to having your web site designed. Did you know that simply because the designers of the Sidney Olympics web site did not follow accessibility laws the entire site had to be complete redesigned to accommodate the disabled? This was at a cost of over £1million.

Don’t get caught out and don’t be afraid to ask questions about the law and how it works.

A simple question like “If a visitor to my site is disabled in such a way that he must be able to navigate my site with only 1 finger, how will they get around and navigate to my pages?”

If your design cannot answer this simple question then get another designer.

Also the entire content of your page must be accessible. How would a blind person access content of Java applets or Flash?

Too many sites have been designed using flash applets and not even considered who is going to access the information. If your web site is not compatible for every one it can be closed down and you may be forced to redesign it to get it back up…
