Simple Remedies for Indigestion and Bloating
Posted by admin on January 10th, 2010Every holiday season, we all have a disposition to suffer the celebratory indulgences: the inordinate eating, imbibing and sleep loss brought on by all those holiday celebrations. While the merriment may be enormous, it also brings on indigestion, gas, bloating, head aches and morning bags under the eyes.
Here’s what you can do to combat holiday indulgences:
Lighten up on the salt. Salty food choices cause fluid retention and swelling; foods holding refined sugar stimulate spikes in blood sugar and, thus, cravings. Alcohol and caffeine cause dehydration. In order for your body’s nourishment system to work, toxins must be flushed. The natural amount of eight glasses of water a day is not enough to detoxify. In order to purify your system while also rejuvenating important vitamins and minerals, we propose that you include, for at least four days, additional fruit juices in the morning and vegetable juices in the afternoon along with your normal diet.
During the first two days after your indulgences, before you eat or drink anything, heat 1 cup hot water combined with the juice of one half lemon, 1/16 teaspoon cayenne pepper and one tablespoon of maple syrup. Lemons are packed with bioflavonoids, which are excellent detoxifying stimulants. Cayenne pepper is an anti-inflammatory. Maple syrup lends sweetness.
About one-half an hour after drinking the hot water and lemon, blend up a simple smoothy of fruit and ground flax seeds. Superb picks are apples, berries, peaches, pineapple, pears, kiwi and oranges. Add a tablespoon of flax seeds and one-half a teaspoon of fresh or ground ginger. Do not include protein powder or yogurt in your smoothy.
Make a very light breakfast only if you are hungry. Good choices are yogurt, a protein powder shake, oatmeal or eggs. For lunchtime have a fat-free meat like fish or chicken and a big vegetable salad with a simple dressing made with olive oil and lemon.
Later in the afternoon have vegetable juices made with carrots, beets, celery, cucumber, parsley and spinach. If it’s an option, wheat grass juice is a wonderful nourisher and cleanser. At dinner, prepare a brothy soup with a small amount of meat or tofu, and noodles or rice. Make the soup broth from real vegetables, not from a mix or can.
